Why You Need an Interior Designer—Even with a Great Contractor

A while ago, I was giving a talk to a wonderful group of ladies in my community about interior design. One of my clients happened to be the host of the evening, and she graciously shared her experience working with me on her kitchen design.

She told the group how much she appreciated the detailed questions I asked to understand her daily routines—how she moved around the kitchen, which hand she used most, and how her space could best support her lifestyle. But what stood out most was the reaction of a contractor in the audience.

This contractor, who I truly respect for their quality work and excellent service, was surprised at the level of detail in my questioning. To them, it seemed excessive. But to my client? It was the difference between a nice kitchen and a perfectly tailored one.

The Difference Between a Contractor and an Interior Designer

Contractors are essential to any renovation. They bring construction expertise, manage the build, and ensure high-quality workmanship. However, their role is different from an interior designer’s.

  • A contractor focuses on execution. Their goal is to build the space according to the plans given to them.

  • An interior designer focuses on personalization. We consider how the space will be lived in—how it should function, feel, and flow.

I’ve seen this time and time again. A great contractor can build a beautiful house, but without the fine-tuning of an interior designer, details that make a space truly functional and unique can be overlooked.

Why Hiring an Interior Designer Matters

1️⃣ We Design for Your Lifestyle, Not Just the Blueprint. A contractor can install cabinetry, but an interior designer asks: Do you need more drawer storage or shelving? Are you left-handed or right-handed? Do you cook alone or with family? These questions shape the layout and usability of your kitchen.

2️⃣ We Think About the Details You May Not Consider. From workflow efficiency to ergonomics and personal preferences, designers bridge the gap between aesthetics and practicality. In one project, a client’s contractor (who was very skilled and respected) didn’t give much thought about small functional adjustments—until I worked closely with the client to make them happen.

3️⃣ We Help You Avoid Costly Mistakes. An interior designer ensures that every design decision is intentional, saving you from expensive changes later. A misplaced light fixture or an awkward cabinet placement might not seem like a big deal—until you’re living with it every day.

4️⃣ We Elevate the Final Look & Feel. Beyond function, an interior designer ensures that your space has cohesion, warmth, and character. A contractor can install a backsplash, but a designer curates the perfect one to enhance the entire space.

Final Thoughts

A skilled contractor is invaluable, but they are not a replacement for an interior designer. When you invest in a designer-contractor partnership, you get the best of both worlds—expert craftsmanship and a space that is uniquely designed for you.
