Greenery: The Easiest Way to Bring Life Into Your Home

The first tip I give to any new subscriber of my newsletter is simple: get flowers for your home. Any kind you like- just go and get them. My personal favorites are roses, especially garden roses. But that’s just me. You do you, but do it.

Adding greenery to a room instantly brings it to life. Whether it’s a potted vine, a statement tree, fresh branches, or a bouquet of flowers, plants add depth, character, and warmth to a space. Long before biophilic design became a buzzword, designers were using plants to elevate their design. People were intuitively buying house plants, putting flowers on their dinner tables and gifting them to others. Greenery has always had a way of making spaces (and people!) feel happier.

Live vs. Faux: Which One Should You Choose?

One of the more common questions I get as a designer is: Should I go for live or faux plants? The answer really depends on you.

I always encourage live plants when possible because they offer so much more than just aesthetics. Tending to live plants is proven to help our mental and physical health; many house plants purify the air and regulate humidity; live plants are environmentally friendly as they naturally decompose and create less waste.

That said, I know live plants aren’t for everyone. Some people travel frequently, others struggle to keep plants alive, and some simply prefer a low-maintenance option. If that’s you, the good news is that there are some beautiful faux alternatives available.

But here’s my golden rule: Stay far, far away from cheap, plastic-looking faux plants. Nothing brings down a space faster than an obviously fake, dull-looking plant. Instead, invest in high-quality, realistic faux greenery. Yes, they might cost more, but like any décor item, it’s an investment for your lasting enjoyment and well-being.

The Middle Ground: Preserved & Dried Plants

If you’re looking for something natural but low-maintenance, preserved or dried plants are a wonderful alternative. Think eucalyptus, dried flowers, pampas grass, moss or simple bare branches. While they don’t offer the same air-purifying benefits as live plants, they’re still an eco-friendly, long-lasting option that adds texture and warmth to a room.

Final Thoughts

Each type of greenery—live, faux, or preserved—has its pros and cons, but ultimately, it comes down to maintenance and personal preference. While I strongly believe that anyone can learn to care for live plants (trust me, if I managed to kill a cactus and still figured it out, you can too!), I also know that a high-quality faux plant is far better than a sad wilting live one.

So, whatever your lifestyle or style preference, there’s a plant for you. The key is to select pieces that enhance your space and bring you joy—because a well-designed home is one that nurtures both the eyes and the soul.

Who would have thought one day I will grow such a beautiful rose?! Watching it bloom is pure joy!
